Cape Meares is a quiet little area  just west of Tillamook Oregon on the Three Capes Loop. There’s  a nice little community of bay & ocean view homes where you can find a small selection of vacation rentals for your stay… or plan to stay in the nearby villages of Oceanside and Netarts.

Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint ~ Cape Lookout ~ Cape Kiwanda

The Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint is located 10 miles west of Tillamook… featuring the Cape Meares Lighthouse and over 3 miles of  hiking trails with spectacular views! A wide asphalt trail provides easy access to the lighthouse and is wheelchair accessible. Benches are conveniently located along the trails to enjoy the amazing scenery or catch your breath. You can return from the Lighthouse on an alternative trail south, where you can enjoy sweeping ocean views along the way.  Picnic tables & viewing areas are available to take a break before hiking to the Octopus Tree (a must see) includes a mile-long trail through old growth spruce trees.

The park is open daily April through October from 11 am to 4 pm ~ Admittance to the Lighthouse is free!  The gift shop offers some unique souvenirs, and a friendly volunteer staff  is there to answer questions & guide your tour.

Cape Lookout & Cape Kiwanda are part of this beautiful 40 mile scenic tour..  here’s a link to detailed driving info courtesy of Northwestplaces.com.

Oregon Coast Cape Meares Lighthouse

Oregon Coast Cape Meares Lighthouse

Going south from Tillamook Head lighthouse you will find my favorite lighthouse near Cape Meares Oregon. The Oregon State parks system runs the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint that is located 10 miles west of Tillamook Oregon. The beach is nearby in the Oceanside/Netarts area where you can find some great ocean view vacation rentals to stay in while enjoying your tour.

The Cape Meares Lighthouse stands 217 feet above the ocean but the tower itself is only 38 feet tall. You can walk up the spiral staircase inside, it offers one of the easiest and closest views of a first-order Fresnel lens that you will find anywhere. After standing next to the glass panes that make the structure of the lens, you will realize the power of a lighthouse!

This park offers some of the most spectacular views to be seen anywhere along the Oregon Coast so plan on spending some extra time walking and observing the viewpoints overlooking the offshore islets where you will find nesting sea birds and stellar sea lions. Don’t forget to hike up the secondary trail to view the enormous arms of a unique tree called the “Octopus Tree” and  just beyond it…  yet another awesome coastline view!

Don’t forget to stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory Visitor’s Center… take the self-guided tour, sample some cheese, enjoy ice cream on a fresh waffle cone watch the “cheese makers” in action upstairs.

Next up… let’s head south to visit “Yaquina Head” lighthouse just north of Newport Oregon.

Agate Hunting in Oceanside Oregon

Finding Agates in Oceanside

Agate hunting is a fun hobby while strolling the beach…  you can find these little treasures on any beach all along the Oregon & Washington Coast…  but one of our favorite spots to search is in Oceanside Oregon. We’ve discovered a couple of great vacation rentals in Oceanside too! If you really enjoy “the hunt”  you might want to locate a vacation home that’s within walking distance to the beach & you don’t miss the low tides:)

The Fall & Winter Season seems to be the best for agate hunting…  the storms send an abundance of treasures to the shoreline… and you can take advantage of discounted vacation rental rates all along the Oregon/Washington Coast.  The quiet season rate usually starts after October 15th, but you will want to double check with the property owner or managers policies as they have their own seasonal timelines.

Not familiar with agates? Here is a resource to show you what you’ll be hunting for… be careful though, once you find one… you can become obsessed…  you NEED to find more! I must admit we have buckets full… some of our friends just don’t understand what we are going to do with “all those rocks“… (the friends who haven’t tried it yet:)

This great hunt for treasure is something for kids of all ages… it’s a must try… spend some time strolling and searching next time you go to the beach… you will be surprised at what you can find!

Pet Friendly Oceanside Oregon

Dakota at the Oregon Coast

Dakota at the Oregon Coast

Is Bowser begging you for a trip to the beach? Then you might check out this quaint little town called Oceanside. It’s located just west of Tillamook on the North Oregon Coast… about an hour and a half drive from Portland. Be ready to run your buddy on the miles of beach with nothing to do but hunt for agates and play fetch!

The Oceanside area is a great place to retreat when all you need is quiet getaway. When you arrive, it feels as if you are at the end of the world… you see nothing but ocean, sand and a hillside full homes with a view to die for. The good thing for both you and bowser is… many of these Oceanside vacation rentals are pet friendly and close enough you can walk to the beach. One of our favorite places to stay is just past the town and around the corner where there is another beach called Lost Boy, if you love to hunt for agates while Bowser is exploring… this is a great spot too. The Lost Boy Beach Cabin sits atop a hill with a stunning view of the ocean, complete with its own viewing deck.

The village of Oceanside consists of a coffee shop with homemade soups, baked goods and Tillamook ice cream too! Then there is my favorite ocean front restaurant… Rosanna’s, for a fine dining experience to remember.  There can be a wait on weekends but its well worth it… especially during a romantic sunset… sorry Bowser you will have to sit in the car!

Thanks & have fun AT THE BEACH with Bowser:)
