Florence to Yachats: A Scenic Stretch of the Oregon Coast
The stretch of Oregon Coast between Florence and Yachats offers a little bit of everything that makes the coast special. There are broad sandy beaches, rocky headlands, coastal forests, winding roads, quiet trails, and two very different coastal communities to explore.
Whether you make the drive as a day trip or spend several nights along the way, this part of the Central Oregon Coast is full of places worth slowing down for.
Start in Florence
Florence sits where the Siuslaw River meets the Pacific Ocean, giving the town a unique combination of river and coastal scenery.
The historic Old Town Florence waterfront is a great place to begin. Stroll along the river, browse locally owned shops and galleries, and stop for lunch or coffee before heading farther south.
Florence is also a convenient starting point for exploring the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The enormous dunes stretch for miles along the coast, creating a landscape that feels completely different from the forested coastline farther north.
Take Your Time Along the Coast
The drive south from Florence toward Yachats is one of those coastal routes where it pays to leave the schedule open.
There are beaches to explore, viewpoints to photograph, trails through coastal forest, and plenty of opportunities to simply pull over and enjoy the scenery.
Heceta Head Lighthouse is one of the most recognizable landmarks along this stretch of coast. Perched high above the Pacific, the historic lighthouse provides an impressive setting and is one of the most photographed spots on the Oregon Coast.
Nearby Heceta Beach offers a completely different perspective, with a broad stretch of sand that is perfect for a walk.
Spend Some Time in Yachats
Further south, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you approach Yachats.
This small coastal community is surrounded by forests, rocky shoreline, and dramatic ocean views. The town itself is easy to explore on foot, with local shops, galleries, restaurants, and places to stop and watch the waves.
Yachats is especially appealing if you enjoy getting outside without needing to plan an elaborate adventure.
Walk the Yachats Ocean Road
One of the best ways to experience Yachats is simply to walk along the shoreline.
The Yachats Ocean Road State Natural Site follows the rocky edge of town, with views of the Pacific and opportunities to watch waves crash against the rocks.
Nearby, Cape Perpetua Scenic Area offers some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the region. The area includes forest trails, viewpoints, tide pools, and spectacular overlooks high above the ocean.
The Cape Perpetua overlook is particularly impressive, providing sweeping views of the coastline from above.
Look for Whales and Wildlife
The Oregon Coast is home to an incredible variety of marine life, and the waters near Florence and Yachats offer opportunities to see whales, seals, sea lions, seabirds, and other wildlife.
During gray whale migration seasons, visitors may be able to spot whales from coastal viewpoints. Even when the whales are not passing by, watching the ocean from a high overlook can be an experience in itself.
Bring binoculars if you have them and take your time at the viewpoints. You never know what might appear offshore.
Beaches, Forests and Waterfalls
One of the best things about this section of the Oregon Coast is the variety of landscapes packed into a relatively short distance.
You can start the morning walking along a sandy beach, spend the afternoon hiking through old growth forest, and finish the day watching the sunset over the Pacific.
There are also waterfalls and forest trails tucked into the coastal landscape, giving visitors plenty of options beyond the beach.
For those who enjoy scenic drives, hiking, photography, birdwatching, or simply getting outside, Florence and Yachats make an excellent combination.
Make Florence and Yachats Part of Your Oregon Coast Trip
You do not have to choose between Florence and Yachats. The two communities are close enough to enjoy both, while each offers its own character.
Florence provides a mix of riverfront charm, dunes, beaches, restaurants, and outdoor recreation. Yachats offers a more rugged coastal setting with rocky shoreline, forests, trails, and dramatic ocean views.
Together, they make a wonderful section of an Oregon Coast road trip.
And perhaps the best part is the journey between them. Take your time, stop when you see a beach or viewpoint that catches your eye, and let the coastline set the pace.
