Things to Do in Newport, Oregon: Aquarium, Lighthouses & the Bayfront
Last updated on October 15, 2026
Newport packs more into one town than almost anywhere on the Oregon Coast — a world-class aquarium, two lighthouses, a working fishing bayfront, and an artsy beach district. Here's how to make the most of it.
Oregon Coast Aquarium
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is Newport's signature attraction and regularly ranked among the best in the country. Highlights include sea otters, a seabird aviary, and Passages of the Deep — a walk-through tunnel where sharks and rays glide overhead. Give yourself a half-day, especially with kids.
Yaquina Head Lighthouse and tide pools
At 93 feet, Yaquina Head is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. You can climb the 114 steps to the top on a tour, but the real magic is the Outstanding Natural Area around it: excellent tide pools, seabird colonies on the offshore rocks, and gray whales offshore year-round (peak migrations pass in winter and spring). Go early — weekend lines can top an hour.
Historic Bayfront
The working Bayfront is where you'll smell the salt and hear the sea lions barking from the docks. Oregon's largest commercial fishing fleet unloads here, so the seafood is as fresh as it gets. Wander the galleries and shops, grab a bowl of chowder, and watch the boats come in.
Nye Beach
For a quieter afternoon, head to Nye Beach — Newport's historic arts district, with a walkable village of bookstores, cafes, and the Newport Visual Arts Center steps from the sand. It's the town's best sunset stroll.
Yaquina Bay and the Science Center
Kayak tours on Yaquina Bay slide under the art-deco Yaquina Bay Bridge past seals, sea lions, and bald eagles. Landlubbers should stop at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon State University's research and education campus, for a free-to-low-cost look at coastal science.
