About this home
A guest suite downstairs-totally separate from upstairs w/a nice garden outside. You walk down a gravel & brick path to enter @ ground level. It is a large studio w/old growth beams & full length windows, kitchen area, bathroom w/ a jacuzzi tub. There is a Paul Bunyan California King size bed w/ steps, w/no railings. Much room to roam. The outside yard is shared space, yet, we don’t walk in front of your windows and will respect your privacy. There’s a garden & fruit trees to graze in season.
The space
Right outside the picture windows is a native Sitka spruce tree and to the south a huge loquat tree I’m often potting plants under it. The largest native Sitka spruce grove south of Alaska is located near Caspar, a few miles away.
This space is not recommended if you have balance issues as the walkway and brick pathway are uneven, the bed takes two steps to get into and the tub is deep.
You will have the complete downstairs of an old growth redwood home. It is a large comfortable studio. Open beams and old growth Redwood abound in this space. It is newly remodeled and comfortable. You’ll have a down comforter on a Paul Bunyan king size bed that has two steps to get into.
There is only one bed.
Please remove your shoes. I provide indoor slippers....or you may want to bring your own. Please be mindful of your pet & tracking in dirt. They cannot remove their shoes! White carpets, fabric furniture, it’s very hard to keep hair and dander off…cover the love seat should your pet like the couch.
It has a furnished kitchen with all necessary pots, pans and dishes. It also has a toaster oven and microwave. It has a farmhouse sink and tile counter with bamboo and black ammomite tones (like the bathroom). The cupboards are made with old growth redwood, much of it uprecycled from our local forest and old growth redwood bridge timbers. I ripped salvaged old growth wood for the cabinets from when I managed an old sawmill. My brother did the remodel. The drawer fronts are a sample of Elm, Chinquipin and Tan Oak from the local forests. It has a coffee maker, electric pot for hot water, French press, stove top espresso maker, blender and cooking staples. There are many cast iron pans in the oven to use as well. There is a complete set of pots, pans and bowls.
To enter the bathroom there are up-cycled historic old growth redwood sliding double barn doors, that came from an older building in Ft Bragg. The bathroom has a vessel sink, stream faucet and shower in a jacuzzi tub. There are towels for your use inside and then beach towels on top of the desk area to take to the beach if you desire. Please hang beach towels outside.
There is a smart TV, to use with your streaming service and Hulu or Netflix as a guest. Under the TV is an electric fireplace for heating. There’s an additional radiant heater for some who really want to keep the space warm. The electric fireplace heat has been fine for me but I’m not everybody!
There is an air purifier (crazy we need one, but the fires have encouraged us!). There’s an oscillating fan (crazy we need one, but the earth is warming!) Our weather would seldom hit 70, a decade ago....now, we have experienced 80s & 90s on occasion. It is the coast; dress appropriately. Layers is always good, or make sure a jacket is in your vehicle; even in summer….especially in summer. The fog rolls in at will!
On a high shelf or on top of the fireplace is a Korean made night light, constructed from paper! It is on a timer from dark to a few hours into the night. You can unplug or reset this if you desire yet it is very mild. (Or it may be unset or unplugged by a previous guest.) Made of paper!!
You’ll find a “Covid Corner” basket on top of the fireplace also. Wipes, disinfectant spray, hand gel, masks and an information book. Great for common infectious ailments. ..help yourself to extra masks if needed.
There is a Lazy boy recliner love seat to watch TV if desired. To lower the footrest, please raise it first all the way, then it will lower with ease. (Ask us how we know—-we found broken parts on the floor! Please don’t force it down…)
The rugs are made from New Zealand wool.
Fast internet has been installed. Over 200mbps anyway.
Remember it is the coast. When it’s hot inland, it brings the fog to the coast and can be chilly and damp in the summer months. Bring warm clothes even in summer, layering is best. We get nice warm days when least expected.
The outside has continuing work. Bear with me this mess! It is complete otherwise. As you return, you’ll see more and more improvements. I want to make tables to put here and there to enjoy the yard and pond area.
We are known on the coast for our rhododendrons, my yard is no exception. Many. I will count soon! Noyo Chief are probably the oldest and over 40 plus years old. There’s a coveted Big Leaf in the driveway. A couple natives and many are 20-30 years old. You’ll find a dawn redwood, weeping Giant Sequoias, weeping Alaskan cedar, weeping Norway spruces….black birch and the oldest trees alive, a Bristle cone pine in the yard. There’s also many fruit trees.
